Oh two year olds. How I love them. No really, I love 2 year olds! Even when my boys were two! But you never know what you are going to get. Sometimes they are easy as pie. Other times it’s a work out to get them to hold still. Usually I’m totally worn out by the end of the session.

Even with a sweetheart like this one! You can’t tell but she wasn’t always this happy. Here is a couple of tips to talking photos of toddlers.

Don’t ever force. It won’t work I promise. They need to feel like that have a little control over what is happening. So we play games! This day the flowers were dying around her and she loved the peddles. So she would laugh like crazy whenever she threw them at me. I, of course, would make a big deal and she would laugh.

Bring a chair! Or stool- either one. But a spot that is just for them to sit. If they are willing to sit down you have a second to actually grab a photo. If they are standing a lot of them are so interested in what is going on around them they won’t hold still. I can’t tell you how many session were saved by having a crate or chair.

Give them space. Some kids will run right up to you and want to hold your hand. Others are going to be really nervous and not want to leave their mom. So I always give them space at first. By the end most kids are running up to me and giving me a hug.

Roll with it! – If they won’t want to hold still and explore- follow them! Get photos of them finding things like sticks and flowers. Let them be a kid! Those end up being the best moments anyway.

Bring favorite toys. Not only does that give them something to comfort them its so cute in photos!

Toddlers are the best- I love photographing them! I hope these tips help!
